Latest Google Search Console Updates

Google Search Console has been designed by Google and it provides tools as well as reports that enable users to analyze their content. By doing so, they can work out the errors and therefore, optimize the content. 

Now since Google is always evolving to become a better version of itself, so is Google Search Console and recently, two new features were added to enhance its efficiency when it comes to analyzing data in reports. 

Users can now filter data using regular expression (regex) and further, make use of an improved comparison mode that can support several metrics, and is not just restricted to one. The two features have been explained further below. 

Regular Expression Support

With regex, users can now create complex queries as well as page-based filters. Google has explained how regex support will be more helpful for site owners,

“For instance, let’s say your company is called ‘cats and dogs’ but is sometimes also abbreviated as ‘cats & dogs’ or even ‘c&d’. You can use a regex filter to capture all of your branded queries by defining the regex filter: cats and dogs|cats & dogs|c&d.”

Such complicated cases weren’t supported by Search Console, like using a query that had one of a few optional strings. The new regex filter can be used by creating a query/page filter and then clicking on the dropdown menu, and finally selecting Custom. 

There are also instances when users won’t be able to use queries and pages to protect user privacy. Another reason for this might also be storage limitations. When either of these things happens, Google displays a reminder whenever the relevant filter is used on queries or pages. 

Improved Comparison Mode

To answer any doubts that site owners might have regarding the comparison of the different metrics, a comparison mode of Search Console is used. Till now, the table didn’t include a comparison column that displayed the relative difference in percentage when more than a single metric was chosen.

The new version that has been launched by Google can support more than metric and this improvement to the interface has almost doubled the area given for the data table. This has made it very easy to see results at the same level. This improved version also supports the new regex filter created for queries and pages. 

One thing to be kept in mind here is that even though more than one metric can now be compared when it comes to application, only one can be applied at a time. If you do add a new metric, the existing one will be replaced by the new one. 

All of these changes have been made available to all the site owners now.
