I see a Problem with our Approach towards Education & Employment

As I have been from a lower middle class family, I know how important it is to get settled in life at the right time. We don’t have the luxury to get a job when we want it. Our parents develop great hopes for us that we will become another earning partner for the family as quickly as possible.

I have been observing numerous stories since my childhood on how families flourish when a new income channel gets added, and also the reverse case. We go to colleges to study Engineering, MBA, Degree etc hoping that after completion we will become something in this society. Some people get the settlement at the right time, because of their efforts and the people who guide them. But their percentage is very less, as less as 10% based on some studies. These are either born intellectuals or students with good guidance and support or students who developed a sense of achievement over a period of time and who have got the right opportunities at the right time.

What about the others? During my 18 years of career I saw many people coming from their colleges and struggling to survive. It takes relatively a longer time for them to settle in life with a decent salary and a satisfying job. Many of them, generally, could not communicate with confidence. To be frank, I was also in the similar situation. It took many years for me to speak confidently to tell what I feel.

Millions of these young students come out of their colleges every year. Some of them settle for low level posts just to survive. I remember working at an internet cafe for a salary of Rs.1200 per month in the beginning days of my career.

All educational institutes conduct programs to solve these problems; such as CRT (campus recruitment training) programs to enable the students on communication, aptitude etc. But unfortunately, according to me, they don’t bring any measurable change. Because, based on my observation, students don’t take them seriously. They generally feel these training sessions are time-pass sessions!

When everybody knows that their kids need to be working after the completion of their education, ideally they should do something which makes their life easy after their education.

My question to the educational institutions and the government is, why no one is serious about it? Based on my practical experience with many colleges, though everyone from top management to the lecturer wants to do the same, it is not happening. There is a problem, a BIG problem.

Let me discuss this issue in my next post.
